Right Division is Not the Real Work
What if I told you I knew the secret to using a hammer the right way and could tell you the hand position, arm motion, type of hammer that would end in a perfect strike every time.
Wouldn’t it be natural to ask, “What do you build?”
Wouldn’t you think it strange if I had never built anything?
Tools are for building. They are used by workmen.
The word of truth is our tool. Rightly dividing the word of truth describes how workmen ought to use the tool. It is not the real work (2 Timothy 2:15). It is not what we are trying to accomplish.
The work is the will of God to see souls saved and saints edified (1 Tim 2:4). It is knowing and growing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Rightly dividing the word of truth helps us do that work by seeing the gospel, will, and work of Christ clearly.
If you are learning to rightly divide, you are learning to use God’s tool for its intended purpose: to build the body of Christ, yourself first, then others.
Every builder on a worksite should know how to use a hammer, but they don’t, at least not in Christianity. For shame!
It is also a shame to know so much about hammers (right division) and never build anything with it. Right division is not the end, it is the means to the end.
Rightly dividing the word of truth is what makes the Bible-believing workman unashamed so that they can accomplish the real work of learning from Christ and edifying His Body.
For Truth,
