As the title states, this is the second part of this series of blog posts. If you have not read the first of the series I encourage you to read it before continuing.

In this second post dealing with where to start studying your Bible I will be sharing the answers to the first section of questions titled “Creation and Israel” which were asked in the previous blog post. I hope that those of you who took the time to find the answers to these questions in your Bible have been encouraged by the truth you read. Perhaps these questions seem somewhat random to you and not very important. When we read any book it is important to understand the events that happen in the beginning of the book and the names of the characters. If you start reading in the middle or the end of a book you may find yourself wondering what the book is talking about and who these people are that keep being referenced. You may be able to put a few pieces together and guess some of the outcomes but more than likely there will still be some loose ends that you will never be able to tie together by only having partial information.

In this aspect the Bible is like other books. We can’t throw out common sense when it comes to reading and studying God’s word. Don’t get me wrong, you can learn truth about God’s word by only reading part of it or hearing someone talking about what the Bible says. If you have trusted the Gospel you know this to be true. I am sure you did not read through the whole Bible before hearing the gospel of the grace of God; that Christ died for our sin and that He was buried and that He rose again on the third day, and when we trust Jesus’ finished work on our behalf for our salvation, we as sinful, unrighteous humanity receive His righteousness by God’s grace through faith alone( 1 Corinth. 15:1-4, Eph. 2:8-9, Rom. 3:22 KJV). We can certainly learn truth in small portions and it can effectually work in us (1 Thess. 2:13 KJV).

Understanding God’s purpose and will for mankind throughout the Bible is a different story. This requires time and study as well as belief. The purpose of the questions in the first section are to equip us with enough information about past events in History regarding how God has dealt with humanity and specifically Israel so that we can understand what is happening in later passages of the Bible. It is just an overview of the old testament portion of your Bible. As I mentioned previously, the purpose is to give you a starting point. Obviously many details are missing, so please read other books of the Bible for more understanding. Many of the answers to the questions are concerning people and events that will be referenced in the new testament portion of your Bible so keep this information in mind when reading future passages of your Bible.

P.S. Many of these questions do not require a drawn out explanation or multiple scripture verse references because they are mostly factual.

      Creation and Israel-(Answers)

1.How many days did it take God to create the world?

      – Genesis 1:31-2:2- The Bible tells us that God created the world in 6 days and says that He rested on the 7th day.

2.When did sin first enter into the world?

-In Gen. 2:16-17 God commanded Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And in Gen. 3:1-6 Eve and her husband Adam ate of the fruit that God had commanded them not to eat and by this sin and death entered into the world.

3.When Noah built the ark how many animals did God tell him to bring on the ark?

-Gen. 7:1-2 Tells us that Noah was to take the clean animals by sevens and the unclean by twos.

(contrary to popular teaching in children classes or traditional pictures of the story of Noah and the ark, he actually brought animals on the ark by more than twos. I don’t remember learning this as a child.)

4.After the flood what was the covenant God made with Noah and all of the earth and what was the sign God gave them?

-Gen. 9:8-17- God made an everlasting covenant with Noah, his sons, and all of the earth that He would never destroy all flesh from the earth again by a flood. God gave the bow in the sky(rainbow) as a sign of that covenant.

5.What did God do at the tower of babble that resulted in many nations being formed?

In the beginning of Genesis 11 we see that everyone on the earth spoke one language and therefore there was no distinction between people in this way. Gen. 11:7-9- God confounded the language of the people and as a result many nations were formed.

6.What were the promises and covenant God made with Abraham?

-There are multiple times in Genesis where we see God speaking to Abram(later to be called Abraham) concerning the promises and covenants He had made with him. This all starts in Gen. 12:1-3 when God instructs Abram to go away from his family, home, and country unto a certain land that God would show him. God then explains all that He would do with and for Abram; He would make him a great nation and bless him and Abram would be a blessing. God would bless those that blessed Abram and curse those that cursed him. And through Abram all of the families of the earth would be blessed. In Gen. 13:12-17 we see God expounding on this information to Abram; Abram would be given all of the land of Cannon. It would also be given to his seed forever and Abram’s seed would be like the dust of the earth. Gen. 15:2 further explains that Abram’s seed would be like the number of the stars. Gen. 17:1-14 tells us that Abram would be a father of many nations and therefore God changed his name to Abraham. God also established the covenant of circumcision with Abraham at that time. This covenant brought a condition on the people of Israel because if they did not keep their end of the covenant those who were not circumcised would be cut off from their people.

7.Which son of Abraham did God establish his covenant with?

      – In Gen. 17:15-19 we see that God would establish His covenant with Abraham’s son Isaac and the seed of Isaac.

      8.Who was Isaac’s wife?

Gen. 24:51- Rebekah was the wife of Isaac. Isaac and Rebekah had twin boys; Jacob and Esau. In Gen. 27:29 and Gen. 28:1-5 we see Jacob being blessed in the same way his father Isaac and his father Abraham had been blessed by God with the promises and covenants.

9.How many male children were born to Jacob?

-Gen. 35:22- Jacob had twelve sons.

      10.What were their names?

-Genesis 29:31-30:24, 35:18; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, Benjamin. These are the twelve tribes of Israel.

11.What did God change Jacob’s name to and therefore naming the nation that God had chosen above all other nations?

-In Gen. 32:28 Jacob’s name was changed to Israel.

12.What was the name given to the Hebrew child that Pharaoh’s daughter found in the river?

-Exodus 2:10-The child’s name was Moses.

13.After Moses had fled from Egypt and the king of Egypt died. What did God send Moses to do because of the cry of the children of Israel who were kept in bondage to the Egyptians?

-Exodus 3:6-10- God saw the cry of the children of Israel and sent Moses to go to Pharaoh so that he may deliver the children of Israel from his hand and bring them into a land flowing with milk and honey that God would bring them to.

14.Who did the Lord send to help Moses?

      -Exodus 4:10-16- God sent Aaron.

15.Name 3 of the plagues which God brought upon the Egyptians because of the hardness of Pharaoh’s heart in not letting the children of Israel go out of the land of Egypt.

1.Exodus 7:19-25- The plague of blood; God caused the water of the river to turn to blood for seven days killing all of the animals of the sea and providing the Egyptians with no water from the river to drink.

2.Exodus 9:1-7- All of the cattle of Egypt dies; God caused all of the cattle of the Egyptians to die but kept all of the cattle of the Israelites alive.

3.Exodus 10:1-15- The plague of Locust; God brought locust into the land of Egypt which covered the land and filled their houses and ate of all of their trees.

16.What 2 foods did God provide for Israel in the wilderness?

-Exodus 16:1-15- God provided bread in the morning which the children of Israel called manna because they did not know what it was (vs. 15). And He provided flesh for them to eat in the evening.

17.In Exodus 19, what did God say that the Children of Israel would be if they obeyed His voice and kept His covenant?

-Exo. 19:3-6- God said that the children of Israel would be a peculiar treasure unto Him above all people and that they would be a kingdom of priest and a holy nation.

18.What man did God use to bring the law to the Children of Israel?

(Exodus 20-32) God called Moses to the top of mount Sinai to deliver His law.

19.Which one of the twelve tribes of Israel was given the office of priest?

-Exodus 28:1- The tribe of the levites. (Exodus 6:16-20) The duties and the office of priest were given to Aaron and his sons.

20.After the death of Moses who did God use to bring the children of Israel into the land He had promised them?

-Joshua 1:1-6- God used Joshua to bring the children of Israel into the land promised to their fathers.

I hope this exercise was as helpful for you as it has been for me. Stay tuned for part three with more answers to Bible questions.
